DZG Expert Center for Medicinal Chemistry
MedChem Platform

How to apply

Step 1: Project Acquisition

In principle, the services of the initiative are available to all DZG projects with a medicinal chemistry focus.

Initial contact can be made on three levels. Firstly, interested parties can find out about the scope of services via this website and submit enquiries directly via Email to the contact persons. In addition, it is possible to contact the MedChem Platform (Centre of Expertise, 'CoE') informally, either through contacts at the DZG, or directly (Laufer, Hartmann/Empting, Plettenburg, Brönstrup).

Step 2: Project Selection

In order to obtain basic information on each request, which is necessary for initial consultation, a project template is provided. The template contains queries on the main question, indication, target validation, target information, patent/IP situation, own preliminary work, competitive situation, project status, project goal. The template can be completed independently by the applicant or in cooperation with the coordinators of the groups in order to keep the hurdle for the project leaders low and the time required to complete it short. Allocation to a 'caretaker' within the CoE is initially based on the targeted medical indication of the project. All project information is kept strictly confidential.

Based on the template, the participating groups Laufer, Empting, Plettenburg and Brönstrup jointly discuss the projects, followed by an internal 'scoring'. On this basis, taking into account the available capacity, a decision is made on whether to accept or reject the project applications. The project leaders are informed about the acceptance or rejection of the project within 3 months after receipt of the template. No information about the internal score or competing project applications is provided. If the project is rejected, the applicants will be informed of the reason for rejection with recommendations for the continuation of the project. Re-application at a later date is possible.

If the project is accepted, initial goals and milestones will be discussed together with the project leader. If the project leader decides to cooperate, the projects will be included in the portfolio.

Step 3: Project Implementation

At the beginning of the implementation, objectives and milestones are defined with the project leader. The project is advanced between the leader and the responsible coordinator in regular exchange. In addition, progress is discussed with the entire CoE team at least once a year. The supervision effort is (roughly) estimated for internal purposes. The portfolio is reviewed at least once a year in a CoE-internal review, and decisions are made on the continuation or termination of support.

As a rule, the CoE will only take over a small part of the experimental implementation, but if necessary it will refer the project to the most suitable partners. These can come from both the academic and the industrial environment. The DZG will be informed regularly (1-2 times/year) about the supervised projects and the progress achieved.

If the project is accepted, initial goals and milestones will be discussed together with the project leader. If the project leader decides to cooperate, the projects will be included in the portfolio.
